Gender roles in health care

Gender roles are the set of attitudes and behaviors socially expected from the members of a particular gender identity. Choice of work is one of the elements that expressed person's gender role. Currently, women take on many roles that were traditionally reserved for men, and men has begun to take roles that were for women.Ideas of appropriate behavior according to gender vary among cultures and era, and may differ with time and place. In pre-industrial Europe, for example, the practice of medicine and midwifery was generally seen as a male role. However, in Russia, health care was more often seen as a feminine role. These views can still be seen in modern society, where European medicine is most often practiced by men, while the majority of Russian doctors are women. In other cases, the elements of convention or tradition seem to play a dominant role in deciding which occupations fit in with which gender roles.Nurse-midwives both reinforce constructs of gender roles. The benefit for a man as a midwive is they have the chance to change these retrograde ideas about gender's roles, and the drawback maybe is that women prefer a women for attend them.
